60-year-old Zohreh’s son is missing. Her husband has left her and she lives with her elderly, foul-mouthed mother and recently widowed and short-tempered daughter in the Ekbatan Housing Project. She has a beauty salon in her apartment and life I good until one day when suspicious letters begin to appear in mailboxes around the housing project that slander Zohreh’s character. Her life becomes a nightmare as problems begin to get worse. We soon find out that Zohreh herself is the author of these leaflets that she writes in order to get revenge on herself and others. It is a game where she loses everything but also wins everything back.

Director’s Statement :

Because of my lifestyle in the past and my coexistence with people from different walks of life and acquiring various experiences such as membership in various social groups, I have reached the conclusion that each member of this society is heavily prone to destruction and masochism due to the judgements, threats, and controls. In addition, by living in families where a few generations had to live in one house beside each other, we have realized  that many of us have never had a private space in our personal life, and while we have been living collectively, we have always suffered from a big loneliness that is very internal and we have not even had the chance to manifest and express it. In fact, the said conditions construct the base of our society which is afflicted with a certain type of alienation, corruption, and rebellion. Now the characters of our story especially the main character, Zohreh , are all in such situations; lives full of secrecy, fear of judgment, suppressed angers, and plenty of regrets. In such a situation, women are more vulnerable than the others. What was said up to here was our sociological reason for making this film, while each one of us – despite being affected abundantly by our surroundings – have our individual feelings, experiences, and many individual complexes that might happen anywhere in the world. Challenges such as doing anything to overcome depression and change the overall atmosphere of life, fear of not being seen and not being taken seriously, display of the dark half of our self to overcome the futility of life, lack of a proper relation with the people around us especially our family members, and other mental problems such as lack of a goal in life and relationships, lost loves, coldness and lack of mutual understanding between people, and suffering from the indifference of the ambient society and vice verca.

The external atmosphere of our story is a residential town in Tehran; an old town with a façade of dirty concrete, numerous windows and corridors, nosy guards, and hidden corners. In this cold grey atmosphere, despite their loneliness and distance from one another, people are controlling each other meticulously. It this closed and dark atmosphere, one of the members of the society starts exposing herself. She even goes further and attributes others’ sins to herself in order to both take revenge on her own lifestyle, loneliness, and the people around her, and reveal her and others’ hidden half in order to expose the fears and complexes of her society.

The form we have chosen for the story is a horrendous genre of story-telling; a story with a large amount of suspension and thrill, and honest and frank at the same time. A collection of intertwined incidents of desperation and suffering of a middle-aged woman whose life is excessively interwoven with the problems of her family and the people around her despite her own will; problems that she decides to end not in a conventional way, but by sacrificing herself. It is a story with social tints that intends to go beyond the portrayal of reality and to discover audaciously the innermost mental and psychological incentives of the characters.

The artistic format of the film including directing, editing… is on the basis of realism and the depiction of the hidden and unseen details of the daily life. However, the difference is that we intend to take different approaches in mise en scene and decoupage for various sets of film according to the content and the incidents that are happening. For example in directing the internal space of the house which is very nervous and tense, closed lenses and the vertical and horizontal pans of the camera on the tripod are used. As the film goes on and the story gains momentum, the shots become closer and the movements become more intermittent. In the external spaces of the story, wider lenses, more suspended and sometimes more flowing shots are used. We have a dark and cold image which is both frightening and silently delusional.

In general, the aim of making this film is to have a questioning look at an ailing society that is filled with judgement, control, and hidden violence which all root in our internal loneliness and our complexes. It is a psychological critique of the cultural, political, and historical structures of the society. In the same way the protagonist of the story exposes and accuses herself to confront herself and the people around her in order to vaccinate herself and her life against future incidents, the film wants to remind the members of the society of the pains and darkness by portraying explicitly the mental disturbance of a human who is affected by her society.
